A poor bureaucrat loses his job at a government agency. His spendthrift and carefree wife threatens divorce, and a new job must be found immediately. To help, he must find a "grandmother" or "protector", which only leads the bureaucrat to new troubles. The film is a hilarious and merciless satire that combines American slapstick comedy, Soviet montage cinema, and innovative filmmaking techniques and surrealism. Completed in 1929, the film was banned in the Soviet Union for 40 years immediately after its completion. The screening is accompanied by Cleaning Women, a self-made instrument-playing ensemble. The trio has been performing for 26 years with the same CW01, CW03, and CW04 cleaner robot lineup. In addition to their original and energetic performances, the group is also known for their silent film accompaniments, which they have presented for over twenty years in various venues around the world. The My Grandmother film accompaniment was originally commissioned for the Tromsø Silent Film Festival in 2016 and has since been performed to full houses at events such as the Sodankylä Film Festival and the Telluride Film Festival. The visually unique My Grandmother film, combined with Cleaning Women's meticulously crafted music, offers a unique cinematic experience that can only be fully appreciated in person. Don't miss it!
